Japan postal code lookup

Enter a 7-digit postal code (the hyphen is optional) or part of an address in Japanese, such as 横浜市西区. Starting with the prefecture makes the search faster, and also lets you search a full address down to the block number.

How it is calculated

Postal codes and addresses are looked up in Japan Post’s postal code data, updated at the end of each month. Where one code covers several towns, all of them are listed; a code with no town of its own, such as 以下に掲載がない場合 (“not listed below”), is shown with the address down to the city.

In English the parts run in the opposite order to Japanese: building and room, street number, town, city, prefecture (without -to, -fu or -ken) and postal code. Cities, wards, districts, towns and villages take -shi, -ku, -gun, -cho (-machi) and -mura (-son), as in Chuo-ku, Sapporo-shi. Romaji comes from Japan Post’s romanized data (Hepburn, long vowels not marked); only towns missing from it are converted from their kana reading the same way.

The postal code or address you enter is sent to our server to look it up, and is not recorded. On the address converter, only the first 40 characters of the address are sent; the conversion to English itself runs in your browser.

FAQ

In what order is a Japanese address written in English?

The reverse of Japanese, smallest unit first: building and room, street number, town, city, prefecture and postal code, then Japan. For example: 1-1 Chiyoda, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 100-0001, Japan.

How do I write chome, ban and go in English?

Usually as numbers joined by hyphens, before the town name. 千代田1丁目2番3号 becomes 1-2-3 Chiyoda.

Why does a postal code give more than one address?

Some postal codes are shared by several towns. A code marked 以下に掲載がない場合 (“not listed below”) covers the parts of the city that have no code of their own.
