How it is calculated
If your period of stay is 6 months or more, you can apply for renewal from 3 months before the expiry date up to the expiry date (Application for Extension of Period of Stay, in Japanese).
A special (deemed) re-entry permit is valid for one year from departure, or until your period of stay expires if that comes first; special permanent residents have two years (Article 26-2 of the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act and Article 23 of the Special Act on the immigration control of special permanent residents (title is our translation), both in Japanese). Periods are counted from the day after departure, as Articles 140 and 143 of the Civil Code provide.
For permanent residency, the page only counts the years in the Guidelines for Permission for Permanent Residence that apply on your application date; it does not judge whether you would be granted it. Applications from 1 April 2027 fall under the revised guidelines. The linked rules are in Japanese; this English text is our own translation, and the Japanese originals prevail.
The figures and rules on this page were checked item by item by an AI (Claude) against the sources above on 2026-10-30. No person has reviewed them.

FAQ
When can I apply to renew my visa (period of stay) in Japan?
If your period of stay is 6 months or more, from 3 months before the expiry date up to the expiry date. If it is shorter, any time up to the expiry date. If you apply before your stay expires, you may remain until a decision is made, but no longer than 2 months after the expiry date (not if your period of stay is 30 days or less). In genuinely unavoidable circumstances an earlier application may be accepted; ask your regional immigration office first.
How long can I stay abroad on a special re-entry permit?
You must return within one year of departure, or by the expiry of your period of stay if that comes sooner, and it cannot be extended from abroad. Special permanent residents have two years. If you miss the deadline you cannot come back on your current status, so get a regular re-entry permit before leaving if you might be away longer. It is not available if your period of stay is 3 months or less or you are a Temporary Visitor, and you must tick the box on the re-entry ED card when you leave.
How many years do I need for permanent residency in Japan?
The guidelines normally require 10 years of continuous stay, including 5 continuous years on a work or family-based status. Shorter periods apply to spouses of Japanese nationals and some others; for applications from 1 April 2027 the spouse rule becomes 5 years of marriage and 3 years in Japan. Meeting the years alone does not mean permission will be granted.
