Japan overtime pay calculator (残業代計算)

Hourly rate

Leave out allowances that don’t count toward premiums: family allowance (家族手当), commuting allowance (通勤手当), separation allowance (別居手当), children’s education allowance (子女教育手当), housing allowance (住宅手当), one-off payments (臨時に支払われた賃金), payments made at intervals of more than one month, such as bonuses (一箇月を超える期間ごとに支払われる賃金). Family, commuting and housing allowances are excluded only when the amount depends on your actual circumstances (number of dependants, commuting cost, housing cost). A flat amount, even one paid only to some employees, must be included.

Hours worked this month

Statutory working hours are generally 8 a day and 40 a week; overtime is time beyond them. Work on the statutory day off does not count toward the 60 hours. Work on other company days off counts as overtime when it takes you beyond 8 hours a day or 40 a week.

Result

Total premium pay (legal minimum): ¥46,875

Hourly rate: ¥300,000 ÷ 160 average scheduled hours a month = ¥1,875

Overtime (up to 60 h): 20 h × 125% = ¥46,875

These are the minimum rates the law requires. If your work rules set higher rates, those apply. Paid substitute leave (代替休暇) that can replace part of the over-60-hours premium is not reflected.

Not covered: variable working hours, flextime, small workplaces with a 44-hour week, managers and others exempt from the working-hours rules, and salaries that already include fixed overtime pay (固定残業代). Hours past your scheduled hours but within 8 a day and 40 a week carry no premium and are not included here (they are still paid at your normal rate).

Amounts are rounded to the nearest yen. Average monthly scheduled hours assume a 365-day year.

How it is calculated

Premiums are the minimum rates set by Article 37 of the Labor Standards Act and the Cabinet Order on premium rates: 25% for overtime beyond statutory working hours, 35% for work on the statutory day off, 25% for late-night work (10 pm to 5 am) and 50% for overtime beyond 60 hours a month. Where late-night work overlaps, the rates become 50% for overtime, 75% beyond 60 hours and 60% on the statutory day off (Article 20 of the Ordinance for Enforcement of the Labor Standards Act). All sources are in Japanese; English titles of the Act and the Ordinance follow Japanese Law Translation, and the Cabinet Order title is our translation.

For a monthly salary, the hourly rate is the salary divided by the average monthly scheduled hours over a year (Article 19 of the Ordinance); this tool uses (365 − days off) × daily scheduled hours ÷ 12. Family, commuting and housing allowances and some other payments are left out of the base, but the first three only when they are calculated from your actual circumstances; flat amounts count (Article 37(5) of the Act, Article 21 of the Ordinance, MHLW leaflet in Japanese).

FAQ

How is overtime pay calculated in Japan?

Hourly rate × overtime hours × 1.25. On a monthly salary, the hourly rate is the salary divided by the average scheduled hours per month. For example, with ¥300,000 a month, 125 days off a year and 8-hour days, that is (365 − 125) × 8 ÷ 12 = 160 hours, so ¥1,875 an hour and ¥2,343.75 (shown rounded as ¥2,344) for each hour of overtime.

What happens after 60 hours of overtime in a month?

Overtime beyond 60 hours a month is paid at a premium of at least 50%, and since 1 April 2023 this applies to small and medium-sized companies too. Work on the statutory day off does not count toward the 60 hours, but overtime worked on other days off does. Late-night hours beyond 60 are paid at least 75%.

What are the rates for late-night and holiday work?

Late-night work (10 pm to 5 am) carries at least 25%, and work on the statutory day off at least 35%. Overtime that runs into late-night hours is at least 50%, and statutory day-off work at night at least 60%. Work on other company days off is not day-off work; it counts as overtime only for the part beyond 8 hours a day or 40 a week.
